From Clare Valley in Southern Australia comes a moving story of a family-run vineyard in a close-knit local community.
Jim Barry is known as one of the pioneering names in the Australian wine making industry. He was the first qualified winemaker in Clare valley and today his vineyard has expanded greatly and his legacy is carried on by his son Peter with the help of his own sons (the 3rd generation of Jim Barry winemakers) Tom and Sam.
Jim Barry and his son Peter came across a retired cricket ground in Coonawarra, the soil of which was perfect for growing Cabernet Sauvignon. So they purchased it, and keeping the cricket pitch en-tact, planted vines all around it. In a similar way to how cricket teams are chosen Peter picks the best 11 barrels of Cabernet Sauvignon to go into this wonderful bottle - the best of the best.
This wine which is enjoyable to drink now, or has the capacity to cellar well into the next decade. It is dark red in appearance. On the nose, lifted Coonawarra mint exhibiting its providence, black jube cassis fruit is well supported by chalky fine grained tannins.
It's all in the soil - so to speak. Winemakers in this region treasure the rich terra soil and porous limestone underneath, which makes for near perfect underground cellars. This, coupled with the talented grape growers and winemakers, have carved a reputation of a truly unique and outstanding style and quality.
