"It was 2003 and I had the honour of tasting a range of old sweet wines from all over Europe. The wine from Schloss Johannisburg was a 1945 Riesling Auslese, which had been hidden in a concrete vault during World War 2. Although coloured deeply brown from age, I was astonished by its freshness and purity, complexity and power. I then realised, and
quickly appreciated the innate quality of this special estate. Their vines and winemaking traditions year after year produce phenomenal wines.
So, over 10 years later, when I came across the opportunity to purchase a parcel of wines from this historic vineyard, I jumped at the chance. With this, I am absolutely delighted to announce that we have parcels of 3 different wines from Schloss Johannisberg. Available exclusively at Waitrose Cellar."
What makes Schloss Johannisberg so unique is that it is a named single vineyard owned by a single producer. All grapes used in the production of their wines were grown and nurtured on the Schloss Johannisberg Estate.
The grape quality is a factor of terroir. This, with careful viticultural practices, and vigilant selection ensures that only the best grapes go into the winery for perfectionist winemaking.
Schloss Johannisberg became the world's first Riesling estate nearly 900 years ago, it is for this reason that it is often referred to as, “The motherland of the Riesling grape”.
Their long history and centuries of refining, coupled with the style of winemaking, bring out the best of this truly magnificent grape, is part of what makes these wines so special.
Straw yellow in colour, on the nose it has a rich creaminess with lime & floral blossom notes and a light complexity of developing kerosene. It has a clear mineral texture, is wonderfully intense and fabulously long with elements of lime, developmental notes and fine integrated taut acidity – perfectly balanced.Xenia Irwin MW, Wine Buyer at Waitrose Cellar
The extremely cold February of 2012 and the cold snap which followed in April slowed nature down and led to a late development of the vines, but the vegetation returned to normal with warmer temperatures in May. The summer months were warm and sunny, especially in August. A dry September brought ideal conditions for ripening grapes. It was a year for a good yield of fully ripe, healthy grapes.
