    The Waitrose Way

At Waitrose we support workers at all levels of our supply chains in a variety of ways to ensure we are treating people fairly.

    The Waitrose Foundation

The foundation partnership, located in Kenya, South Africa and Ghana, was created in 2005 to help farms and their employees improve their standard of living by passing a percentage of the profit back to the community to fund social projects.

    Working with local communities

The Waitrose foundation has been working with Cederberg wines since 2005. Like all of our other foundation projects a percentage of the profits from this wine is returned to the area it was produced in to fund community projects.

Foundation funding is currently being used to build extensions onto a school in the area, space which will become a central hub for the community. The extended school will be used in several ways including a crèche, community and a centre where the community can come for access to mobile medical clinics.

The difference the Waitrose Foundation can make

The workers choose this project to provide a single space to improve education, healthcare and community activity.

How has the Waitrose Foundation benefited the local community?

    • The change from a mobile clinic to a proper room allows for proper care for each individual. Patients won't have to stand outside waiting for medical care in the heat.

    • Overall health of the individual and the community as a whole will improve as clinic days will be held more frequently.

    • The building will allow the community to get together, be more creative and act as a centre of activity for younger people.

    • The crèche will help greatly with the development and education of young children.

Expert reviews

Waitrose Foundation Cederberg Chenin Blanc with salmon fillet with a parsley crust

"Help for an isolated community. This is a deliciously fresh and fruity wine from an isolated vineyard 1,000 metres above sea level in South Africa.

As it's a Waitrose Foundation wine, money from every bottle sold pays for community projects, such as education and healthcare, to improve the lives of the farm workers and their families. "
