    Meopham Valley

Once the hammer goes down at auction that's it! You'd better play the game! We were totally naïve and all was either a disaster or a miracle. So, when I saw a bunch of the Pinot Noir grapes emerging for the first time, it definitely was a miracle! David Grey

In the late 1990s Pauline and David Grey were on holiday in France, they were turning 50 and were subconsciously (on reflection) looking for a new adventure.

A friend who they were traveling with was progressively been getting interested in English wine and his enthusiasm was contagious.

That is when the idea of having a vineyard was born.

By that time David had had a long career as an accountant and Pauline was teaching children with dyslexia.

They didn't want somebody else's vineyard but wanted to plant afresh. In France, this was not possible, so they began their search for a field in England.

They started to look for an expert to help them plant, while both were taking classes on planting a vineyard from a lady in Devon.

To add to the challenge, David and Pauline decided to plant organically. The first battle they had to face was the nettle invasion; it took a few years before grass took its place.

Yet, they stuck to their guns and 5 years in, suddenly, vines began to grow.

In 2006 A lady knocked on their door and asked for work. This lady was Janette Devlin, a Plumpton College student at that time.

Janette stayed with the Greys for more then 6 years and has been incremental to the success of their wines.

As all this time David was still working as an accountant, the family really needed people to help in the vineyard.

This is when Surjit and Ben came to their rescue. They lived nearby and have managed to pull together a team from their community to work at the vineyard.

They have been with the Greys since 1995 and when the vineyard was put for auction in 2014, it landed in their safe hands.
