In an English vineyard
English Wine Intro

We are proud suppliers of over
50 vineyards from over 23
countries in England and Wales.

Proud to support English
and Welsh winemakers

Every major wine competition
throws up more gold medals for
English wines, and yet our native
winemakers are so ambitious, they
are determined to do better still.

At Waitrose, we love the thrill of discovering
new and wonderful English & Welsh
wines, not just from the big, established
winemakers but also from smaller boutique
wineries and new start-ups.

Home-grown
sparkling success

We were the first supermarket
to plant a vineyard and after four
years in the making 2011 saw the
first vintage of Leckford Estate.

Since that historic first release, our
dedicated Partners at Leckford work
hard each year nurturing vines and
harvesting grapes. And after working so
hard we don't put our precious crop into
anyone's hands. The talented team at
Ridgeview do a fantastic job in creating
an excellent quality English fizz. What
can else can we say, we're absolutely
thrilled with the results.

English Did You Know

Did you know
an Englishman
"invented"
Champagne?

In 1662 born in Gloucestershire, presented a paper to the Royal Society in London that first documented the process of making sparkling wines as we know it today – 30 years before the technique was discovered in Champagne.

Nyetimber Classic
Cuvee NV

West Sussex, England

"As featured in Jane MacQuitty's
Top 100 Wines - The Times"

Pride of place must be given to Nyetimber -
our bestselling English sparkling wine, one of
the most internationally acclaimed English
sparkling wines, they have triumphed against
top-flight Champagnes and even the most
experienced tasters have mistaken their wines
for serious Champagne. Meticulous in the
extreme, their chief winemaker, Cherie Spriggs,
made headlines in 2012 when she declared the
vintage not up to scratch and therefore they
would not be making a wine that year.

Leckford Estate Brut

Hampshire, England

Last, but certainly not least, is our very
own sparkling wine. Leckford Estate is
made with the holy trinity of grapes used
for traditional Champagne: Chardonnay,
Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. It is aged for
a minimum of 18 months resting on its lees,
which adds notes of toasted brioche and
hazelnuts to the array of bright citrus,
apple and white peach flavours.

The UK Wine Awards is the national
competition for wine produced from grapes
grown in England and Wales.

The wines were judged by 12 top wine experts who encompass all fields
of the world of wine: writers and broadcasters to those at the sharp
end of wine buying for retailers and restaurants; wine merchants and a
wine technologist. A tough jury including our very own Becky Hull MW

Rebecca Hull MW, English Wine Buyer at Waitrose and one of the UK Wine Awards judges,
commented, “Waitrose have been stalwart supporters of English and Welsh wines for
many years now, and we see customer demand for them growing year upon year. These
wines are world class and the Awards will certainly serve to highlight some of the gems
produced on our own doorstep. We’re really proud of our support of this exciting and
growing industry.”
