  • Schloss Johannisberg

    900 years of history bottled

I tasted a 60-year-old Auslese from Schloss Johannisberg in 2003 at a Master of Wine tasting and I was so impressed I never forgot itXenia Irwin MW, Wine Buyer Waitrose Cellar

It was 2003 and I had the honour of tasting a range of old sweet wines from all over Europe. The wine from Schloss Johannisburg was a 1945 Riesling Auslese, which had been hidden in a concrete vault during World War 2. Although coloured deeply brown from age, I was astonished by its freshness and purity, complexity and power. I then realised, and

quickly appreciated the innate quality of this special estate. Their vines and winemaking traditions year after year produce phenomenal wines.

So, over 10 years later, when I came across the opportunity to purchase a parcel of wines from this historic vineyard, I jumped at the chance. With this, I am absolutely delighted to announce that we have parcels of 3 different wines from Schloss Johannisberg. Available exclusively at Waitrose Cellar.

    About the vineyard

What makes Schloss Johannisberg so unique is that it is a named single vineyard owned by a single producer. All grapes used in the production of their wines are grown and nurtured on the Schloss Johannisberg Estate.

The grape quality is a factor of terroir. This, with careful viticultural practices and vigilant selection ensures that only the best grapes go into the winery for perfectionist winemaking.

    The Queen of grapes

Schloss Johannisberg became the world's first Riesling estate nearly 900 years ago, it is for this reason that it is often referred to as, “The motherland of the Riesling grape”.

Their long history and centuries of refining, coupled with their style of winemaking, bring out the best of this truly magnificent grape and is part of what makes these wines so special.

    Our buyers extended tasting notes

A pale yellow golden colour with a buttery richness and citrus lime notes. This wine has real purity of style. With fine minerality, it is fresh and clean and has a great structure. Very fine, intense elegant and floral it has rapier-like linearity of immense length. Young, yet a real keeper.Xenia Irwin MW, Wine Buyer at Waitrose Cellar

    Vintage profile from the vineyard

The viticultural year 2013 started with an unusually long winter, thus Spring was delayed, resulting in late flowering on the vines. Summer was warm but quite dry and yield was reduced by one-third of an average crop, but the quality was fantastic. The wines are deep, rich in extract with intensive fruit flavours and a long, fresh finish.
