Simon Hackett

Awe-inspiring quality from a winemaking 'wizard'...

The awed silence in the tasting room when the Cellar team tried the 'Champion' spoke volumes. And Master of Wine Xenia Irwin couldn't hide her pride at old friend Simon Hackett's incredible achievement – which she has secured just for you.

Cabernet from Coonawarra has been celebrated worldwide, but Simon Hackett has taken it to another level of complexity and sophistication.

This displays the hedonistic opulence, cigar box aromas and blackcurrant purity normally found in a few celebrated clarets, which fetch hundreds of pounds. It proves that in wine, who you know is invaluable.

And this is one winemaker worth meeting. A real character, Xenia calls him a winemaking wizard, and not just because of his beard... Simon's ability, passion and knowledge is phenomenal.

He grew up immersed in wine in the Barossa Valley. Choosing winemaking as a career at the tender age of 18, he learnt from Aussie wine icons before going solo in 1984.

Named Champion after Simon's father, his creation is one of the greatest Cabernets we've experienced. But if you want to taste perfection you will have to act fast – we are down to 300 bottles and the team are snapping it up.
