  • Glenlivet

    The Glenlivet

Glenlivet is a special place in Speyside. Translated from Gaelic, the name means 'valley of the smooth-flowing one'.

This history of Glenlivet goes back over 200 years but it was in 1824 when George Smith obtained a distiller's licence so he could legally produce and trade whisky.

In a time when smuggling was rife throughout the country, George's legal operations didn't go unnoticed and he regularly received threats on his life.

George Smith passed away in 1871, but his legacy lived on in his son and heir to the distillery John Gordon Smith just as much as it did in the spirit in the casks.

For the best part of two centuries only ten people in the world have had the experience and expertise required to produce The Glenlivet and in this time the brand has gone from strength to strength

  • Haig

    The Master Distiller

Alan Winchester was appointed as Master Distiller of The Glenlivet in 2009. He mastered a dazzling succession of skills as mashman, brewer and stillman in 20 distilleries until he reached his present position, applying his wisdom and passion at every level.

As Master Distiller, Alan is the ultimate custodian of The Glenlivet. It is his job to ensure the legacy that George Smith began all those years ago continues: that the whisky is always of supreme quality and that all new products reflect the spirit's character and depth. A tremendous responsibility, and one that he takes great pride in.

    Tasting note

The exceptional character of The Glenlivet spirit is apparent even before the cask ageing process begins, a result of the unique lantern shaped pot stills they use at The Glenlivet.

The skilful selection of casks enhances the signature fruity flavours and with traditional oak casks being complemented by selective use of American first-fill casks to give a hint of creamy sweetness – creating a well-balanced and smooth malt.
