Fairtrade is a global movement that supports farmers and workers, promoting better trading conditions, future development and environmental preservation.

Wines with a Fairtrade Mark all contain grapes produced in an environment which meets Fairtrade Standards. A fair price is paid to the producer, ensuring sustainable production which fuels social and economic growth in small communities in developing parts of the world.

    From Argentina with love

In 2009 Waitrose started to buy Fairtrade wines from Tilimuqui, a small rural village in Argentina. Since then the relationship has blossomed and Waitrose sales have raised £20,000 fairtade premium for the community, with is used to fund local programs such as their agricultural school.

The winery, called La Riojana, is well known for producing outstanding wines. Last year they received a Gold Decanter award for their Tilimiqui Cabernet Sauvignon/Bonarda.

    Community projects supported by Fairtrade

Maria Elena Morales is 15 years old and lives in the village of Tilimuqui, where she has lived all her life. She is one of ten children in her family and the first to attend the new secondary school in Tilimuqui which has been funded through the Fairtrade premium.

For Maria Elena the biggest advantage of attending the new school is that when she finishes her secondary education she will have more job opportunities. After finishing Colegio Nacional Agrotecnico, Maria Elena would like to study veterinary medicine.

Maria Elena's parents are very pleased with the new school. The fact that it is in the village close by is a major advantage, as is the fact that it gives children a technical training alongside their academic qualifications, allowing them to work straight after leaving school.

Expert reviews

"Be brave and give this varietal a go. It makes a great alternative if you are looking for a change from your usual tipple of Sauvignon Blanc or Pinot Grigio"
