Rhône's popular regions

Châteauneuf du Pape vineyard

The most famous appellation in the Rhône Valley

The region of Châteauneuf-du-Pape is situated in the Southern Rhône and is the most renowned appellation in the Rhône Valley. Famous for its full-bodied red wines, the uniqueness of this area is due to the number of varieties allowed in a blend - up to 13 different red varieties are permitted. The region also produces small quantities of white wine.

Côtes du Rhône vineyard

One of the most diverse wine regions in France

This large appellation in the Rhône Valley is known for its easy drinking, food loving styles that are best drunk young. The region produces a diverse range of wines, predominantly red, from full-bodied examples in the north to light, fruity styles in the south, blended mainly from Grenache and Syrah.

Gigondas vineyard

Robust wines that age brilliantly

In Northen Rhône is the small region of Hermitage; the vines here grow on the steep Hermitage hill facing the afternoon sun. Syrah dominates production, with 70% of the vineyards growing this red variety. Smaller amounts of the white varieties Marsanne and Roussanne are also grown. Red wines from Hermitage age excellently and produce a robust meaty wine with subtle spice notes, while the whites have characteristics of honeysuckle, peach and apricot.

About Rhône

The Rhône Valley is home to some of the oldest vineyards in France and is the spiritual home of many Mediterranean grape varieties. Divided into two distinct areas, the region produces a diverse range of wines that are excellent for enjoying now, but can also be cellared to mature and develop.

In the north, powerful reds are made from Syrah as well as some exquisite whites in the slightly cooler climate.

Heading south, the hills disperse and a sea of vines appears; this is Grenache country, arguably home to some of the best-value red wines in the world. The reds here are full of sun-drenched spicy fruit and really lend themselves to food.

Situated in the Northern Rhône is the region of Côte-Rôtie. The vines here are planted on an extremely steep slope, exposed to the baking sun, yet protected from the wind. Syrah is the only red grape variety permitted and grown in Côte-Rôtie, but there are also small amounts of Viognier which is added to the red wine to create a highly perfumed style.

Costières de Nîmes

Located in the Southern Rhône, Costières de Nîmes sits next to the Côtes du Rhône region and offers the same style of ripe, rich wine with black fruit and a hint of pepper spice. The Mediterranean climate suits the principally red grape varieties permitted, which include Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre. This blend creates naturally robust and fruity wines that age brilliantly.

On the right bank of the Rhône River are the vineyards of Cornas. Meaning 'burnt earth', the Syrah grapes grow up the steep naturally formed amphitheatre. Wines are made exclusively from Syrah and produce a very dark wine, almost black with a hint of purple. These robust vines produce wines that will age for years to come.

Wines from this Southern Rhône appellation are made using Grenache and Syrah. Even though all the wines that are produced are red, a small amount of white various grape varieties are blended in to the wine. This creates a complex wine brimming with summer fruits but with a hint of spice.
