At the heart of South Africa’s Wine Route

This inland wine region, located in the Western Cape province of South Africa, sits at the heart of South Africa’s famous Wine Route. Bordered by the Breede River and Langeberg Mountains, the vineyards along the riverbank concentrate on Sauvignon Blanc whereas the vineyards in the foothills of the mountains tend to grow Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.

Stellenbosch is a hugely important wine district in South Africa’s Western Cape with a flourishing reputation for fine wines, especially the area’s superb Cabernet Sauvignon which is considered some of the best in South Africa. Most known for its red wine production, it also makes some notable white wines using Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay.

Walker Bay is a coastal wine district in South Africa’s Western Bay. Its maritime climate allows the area to specialise in cool climate grape varieties such as Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, with Walker Bay Pinot Noir considered some of the best in South Africa. Other grapes grown here include Sauvignon Blanc, Shiraz and Merlot.

The Cederberg mountains are situated just north of Cape Town, and are home to some of South Africa’s highest vineyards. A number of wine estates reside in this unique setting due to the grape growing conditions on offer. The cool climate, sunny days, remote location and clear water produce fruity wines with exceptional purity, most notably its red wines.

Only an hour’s drive from Cape Town, Swartland is an up-and-coming wine region. Producing excellent Chenin Blanc from some of the oldest, low yielding vines South Africa has to offer. The region also produces excellent red and rosé wines.

Only a 45 minute drive from the South Africa’s capital Cape Town is Wellington, the heart of the Western Cape wine region. Nestled between the Hawequa mountains, it boast more than thirty wine producers from historical estates to boutique wineries, producing a diverse range of wines using Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage, Shiraz and Chenin Blanc.

North of Stellenbosch is the district of Paarl, a warm wine region where the grapes tend to be grown at altitude to keep them cool. A diverse variety of grapes are grown including Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinotage, Shiraz, Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc. The region also includes the wards of Simonsberg-Paarl, which produces some excellent sparkling wines.

A small town situated about 75km from Cape Town, Franschhoek is home to some of the oldest wine estates in South Africa. The region is set in a valley surrounded by mountains and is known for its excellent reds made using Shiraz, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. It also produces superb Chardonnay and Chenin Blanc.

Head over Table Top Mountain in Cape Town to the vineyards of Constantia, South Africa’s oldest wine region. With only five wine estates to its name, Constantia is small but perfectly formed. Each winery produces wine using Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay, Shiraz and Pinotage grapes.

Elgin lies on an inland plateau near Cape Town and only 10km from the coast. Its cool climate, high altitude vineyards, long ripening seasons and diverse soil types provide the ideal conditions for the cultivation of cool climate grapes. Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer and Riesling all do well here.

A recently declared wine ward in South Africa, Elim is up and coming producing some outstanding cool climate whites. The cool breezes that come off the Atlantic Ocean and the cold air surrounding the sandstone mountains are a distinctive feature of the Elim ward. Grapes that flourish in these cooler conditions include Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir.
