From wine merchants to whisky makers

Exclusive to Waitrose & Partners, The Famous Grouse Wine Cask is a full-bodied edition of the Cask Series. It gains its rich fruit flavour from spending time maturing in Spanish red wine casks, which have been carefully picked by the master blender, and it imparts its classic, smooth characteristics from The Famous Grouse Whisky.

In a time before the 'The Grouse' became 'The Famous Grouse', when Matthew Gloag & Son was established as a limited company in 1905 (and young Phillippa Gloag drew a red grouse for the label), the Gloag family business had been focused on wines. They then diversified into blending whiskies in 1875 following the Great French Wine Blight. Today, that wine-merchant heritage is combined with more than a century of crafting whisky to make this full-bodied, smooth Scotch whisky that tastes of dark chocolate, cherries, nutmeg and a touch of black pepper.

After dinner, serve it neat, with a few squares of dark chocolate as a wonderful alternative dessert. Or for a longer drink, perhaps when catching up with friends, pour some over ice, top with tonic water and add a wedge of fresh lime.
