Notes of citrus, stone fruit and just a hint of flint
Celebrated producers Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines created Great Heart as a staff empowerment project, one completely owned by the winery employees where sales and profits are aimed at improving the livelihoods of the staff and their families.
"This is a huge opportunity to better lives and livelihoods. I am proud to be part of a project I can call my own,” explains Gynore Fredericks, assistant winemaker at the multi-award winning Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines (pictured, centre). The project Gynore is talking about is Great Heart, a staff empowerment company, aimed at improving the livelihoods of all employees of the winery and their families.
Profits from the wines made under the Great Heart label – including this stunning Chenin Blanc and the gorgeous Red Blend – go directly to the employees who own the brand and make the wine.
The concept for Great Heart came about during the 2020 coronavirus pandemic when vineyard owners Chris and Andrea Mullineux (pictured above) saw just how hard their team were working, under such difficult circumstances, and wanted to reward them in a meaningful way. Great Heart is therefore a separate business to Mullineux & Leeu, but uses the same vineyards and cellars to make its wines.
The labels themselves were designed by Jaco Sieberagen and inspired by his sculpture, which shows a flock of Cape wagtails – a bird known in South African folklore for its selflessness, courage and its great heart.
Naturally, the best way to enjoy these wines is with the great hearts in your life – fine food and wonderful friends. Serve this zesty Chenin Blanc chilled as an apéritif or with antipasti platters and fresh salads.
