South Africa's winemaking heritage dates back to the 16th century. The moderate, largely Mediterranean climate is tempered by the cool currents of the Atlantic Ocean, offering unique growing conditions for the production of refreshing whites as well as fruit-driven reds. White varieties are dominated by the popular Chenin Blanc, showing tropical fruit and a bright acidity. As for reds, prestigious producers are making complex 'Bordeaux blends' from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Shiraz also flourishes.
We have two Waitrose & Partners Foundation wines in our range: a lovely Chenin Blanc and a Shiraz, made at the exceptional Cederberg Wine Farm. A portion of the profits funds local community projects.
