Wines for the barbecue

Mixed cases are ideal for larger gatherings as you’ll instantly please most palates - Malbec or Shiraz for the steak sandwich, Chardonnay for chicken wings, and then choose some refreshing beers for the sausages. But it’s also worth considering what sauces you’re serving on the hotdogs and side salads, what wines are suitable for vegans and vegetarians and are you grilling bananas or fruit kebabs for dessert?

Marinated or glazed meat can be sweet and rich, so go for a lighter-bodied red that’s still packed with flavour, such as Beaujolais or Gamay. Pinotage is ideal with pork chops, as is a Chenin Blanc (also from South Africa) with its crisp appley notes. For grilled steaks, lamb chops and burgers, it's got to be an Australian Shiraz - but why not try a sparkling one and serve it slightly chilled?

Champagne and cava work with most grilled fish, but if yours is flaky (sea bass, tilapia) try an unoaked Chardonnay (Chablis), if it's oily or strongly flavoured go for an Albariño or if monkfish is on the skewers, then Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand will suit.

Low and no alcohol wines might be more welcome for summer puddings or lemon pavlovas, but if marshmallows are being toasted, then finish with a caramel tawny port.
