Rioja is a favourite of many traditional red wine lovers and a go-to wine on restaurant wine lists. But step outside this small region in Northern Spain and you will find a host of similar wines at very affordable prices. Next door to Rioja is a region called Navarra where you will find reds made with exactly the same grapes varieties: Tempranillo and Garnacha. These grapes also thrive in other regions, notably Garnacha in the Rhône, where it is known as Grenache and goes into the great wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. Both Tempranillo and Grenache are also finding favour in Australia, where their rich fruitiness is given full expression.
