Not only is the pig logo of The Hedonist wines instantly recognisable and distinctive – so are its wines, all of which are skilfully crafted from certified biodynamic and organic vineyards by veteran winemaker Walter Clappis, his daughter Kimberly Cooter and her husband James Cooter (pictured).
Most of the fruit for The Hedonist Shiraz grows in the Willunga foothills of McLaren Vale, South Australia, but grapes are also sourced from other areas across the district, and each brings its own characteristics from the varied soils and climates to create a full-flavoured wine.
Notes of crunchy red berries, juicy blueberries, spicy liquorice, nutmeg and cracked black pepper are elegantly balanced by firm tannins, refreshing acidity and a smooth, velvety texture. Serve with cured, grilled or barbecued meats – especially bacon, hamburgers, sirloin steak or marinated beef short ribs.
